Kavali is a town in Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh of India. It is one of the municipalities, and the second largest town in the district.

Etymology

Kavali is also known as Kanakapatnam meaning 'wealth will flow into this place' coined by Potuluri Virabrahmendra Swami and in the local language it means patrol. This name arises from the fact that in 1515, the Udayagiri king Harihara Rayulu stationed his army at this town.

Geography

Kavali is located at .[4] It has an average elevation of 17 metres (56 ft). Kavali is second biggest town in Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh State, India. Kavali is 8 km from the Bay of Bengal.

Demographics

As of 2011 Census of India, the town had a population of 82,336. The total population constitute, 41,018 males, 41,318 females and 7,735 children, in the age group of 0–6 years. The average literacy rate stands at 81.09% with 60,497 literates, significantly higher than the national average of 73.00%.[5]

Assembly and parliament constituency

Kavali is an assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh. Kavali parliamentary constituency came into being in 1962 and was lost in 1977. This was due to the delimitation based on the population. Now it is a part of the Nellore parliament constituency. The reference is Kavali (Assembly constituency)

Transport

Kavali railway station is located on Howrah-Chennai main line. It is classified as a B–category station in the Vijayawada railway division of South Central Railway zone.[6] AH 45 through the town and is well connected by APSRTC buses from all parts of Nellore district. The nearest international airport is Anna International Airport and Tirupati Airport.
