The MUST

With a view to enhance facilities for higher education and research in the state of Azad Jammu & Kashmir and the adjoining areas, in the field of Science & Technology, Presidential Ordinance No. XVIII of 2008 was promulgated on 15 August 2008. To start with, three entities of The University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, namely, Ali Ahmed Shah University College of Engineering & Technology, The University College of Home Economics and the Institute of Islamic Studies were transferred in the name of the University.

These institutions, located in the beautiful city of Mirpur, proved to be a worthy seat of learning for Computer Science and Information Technology, Engineering, Home Economics and Islamic Studies for 28 years. Meritorious services rendered by these institutions are laudable. The students having been bestowed upon degrees in their respective disciplines, mentioned above, are enthusiastically serving the nation, and the humanity at large, at home and abroad.

The new status heralds a new sign of revolutionary uplift of education. Evidently, there are certain requirements, rather pressing ones; first and foremost is that of land. Out of total requirement of 5000 Kanals, 4800 Kanals have already been awarded in the suburbs of the city. It may fulfill the requirements of future expansion at least for five decades. The calm and peaceful environment is conducive to academic and research activities.

The new university with the name of MUST is really a beginning of new era in terms of imparting quality education. Ours is an auspicious transformation from smaller to bigger, from lower to higher and from better to the best in the real sense of the term. Our qualified staff is devoted to the very cause of sublimity and perfection. The veteran staff, embodiment of professionalism, is involved in class work along with research and other scholarly activities. Living in this age of marvelous scientific and technological achievements, advancements in these fields are intrinsically of paramount importance.

The University started functioning with the infrastructure facilities already available at Ali Ahmed Shah University College of Engineering & Technology Mirpur, The Faculty of Home Economics and Institute of Islamic Studies, situated right in the heart of the city. The University shall be shifted to its new location; a picturesque spot Sainse, 15 kilometers away from the city on the main Mirpur-Bhimber road. Mirpur University of Science & Technology (MUST) Mirpur A.K differs in its character from AJ&K University Muzaffarabad by its high powered body "Senate"; a body with full integrity of formulating statutes, rules and regulations, purchasing, maintaining and disposing of moveable and immoveable property, creation and abolition of posts and maintenance of academic and administrative disciplines.

Such a body is non-existent in AJ&K University. Our new born university MUST is endeavouring its best to take up the challenges of the day and come up to the national expectations and aspirations. We are equipping our laboratories with modern apparatus so that we may be able to quench the thirst of our students for knowledge. The MUST is determined to produce such graduates as to prove the grist to the mill of the nation. Enhancement of standard is our pivotal goal and we are doing our best to make the MUST worthy by all standards. It will touch the bliss of eminence in a short span of time.

Facilities

Library

The Central Library which is present in electrical department devotes considerable efforts and resources to the development of a library collection. It serves as the regional reference library of engineering & technology.

The library collection includes general circulation books, reference books, encyclopedias, handbooks, periodicals, research journals, government and archive documents. The library offers specialized services in the University campus utilizing computerized retrieval of bibliographic databases containing references to thousands of articles, books, proceedings, technical reports and statistics. Others campuses' libraries are also under construction.

Laboratories

All departments have their own set of laboratories primarily employed in teaching undergraduate students.

Some of the departments have been receiving active funding from the government during the past few years, which has helped them upgrade their labs with the latest Engineering equipment available.

Internet Service

LAN internet facility is available now in most of computers and labs. There is a Wi-Fi Internet service available in Offices and is also available for students.

Scholarships

The university provides many scholarship opportunities to its brighter and needy students. Most of these are provided by private foundations, NGOs, and Alumni.

Other Facilities

Some other facilities like, Hostels for students, Masjid, Student Cafeteria and outdoor sports facilities are also available in the campus. Recently a new gymnasium is being constructed in Mechanical Engineering Department. Every year a Sports Week is also held in which different sports take place like football, cricket, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and many other. Besides this students also organize their own tournaments.

Admissions in MUST

Undergraduate admission in MUST is very competitive. After completion of higher secondary school level (HSSC) education, a student can submit his application for undergraduate admission if he/she fulfills the minimum requirements. Students with a minimum percentage (60%) in HSSC exams with core subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English are allowed to appear in the admission test organized by the MUST and other institutions often called Engineering university & college admission test (EUCAT). The process allows all the students who qualify for the test to sit for the admission test. After the admission test, consecutive merit lists are prepared allowing the students who secured good results in both HSSC and EUCAT to get the opportunity to study in the prestigious institutions. However, for admission to B.sc and MS. programs candidates are required to appear in interviews and/or written tests. There is a good percentage of seats reserved for areas other than Azad Jammu & Kashmir and for Refugees of kashmir. The pre-requisite qualification for admission is H.S.S.C. or GCE A level or its equivalent with good grades in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Future Vision

The university administration has promised many plans and visions in future. It includes following:

  1. Construction of new departments.
  2. Construction of hi-tech laboratories for all engineering programs. Especially for Civil and Mechanical engineering departments.
  3. Construction of new engineering campuses in 5000 kanals#Starting new programs and enrollment of more students.
